Introduction

Welcome!

For a lot of years I'm playing with the idea of creating a roleplaying group after a lot of rolepaying myself.

Larp is a game  where you create and play a character of your own choice. Mostly acted out in the open fields and with other players within that group. The theme and tribe depends on which group you join. Some are Celtic, Roman, Saxon, Norse, Sci-Fi, Historical or Dark. They come together from once a week to monthly, or a couple a times within a year. The duration of this game can last 3 hours to a weekend or a whole week!

About the Game

The game

To begin with you can choose your own character, deepen it out and dress accordingly. You can go wild!  On the Internet are specially Larp-shops with costumes, latex or rubber weapons. Or make your own. This is your change to be creative!

It is understandable that a lot of people go for a warlord or lady. But there are much more characters to choose from. By register in it will go on a first come first serve base. Of course you can also register as a clan!

Stick with your character for at least 3 months. If you want to change let it “die”, and recreate and register a new one. Feel, be, live,  your character. How does a Warlord fight or boast, a dwarf talk, an Elf walk?

You do it for fun:  there is no one to judge you!

It's not a play for an audience, but off course people are welcome to watch.

The story

The story is basically planned by the storyteller [gamekeeper, scald etc.], with additional help from others. Mind: it's a story, no manuscript, so no one tells you what to say exactly! There's a lot of space for improvisation.

There is always room to come with a surprise act, keep it a secret!

The storyline always involves a battle, invading tribes, quest, celebration of Celtic Festival, Queens visit or a

God-dess, champions fight, dedication of new warriors, purifications, handfastings and so on!

For example: the story will be about a battle between clan a and clan b. It's up to the clans to agree on who attacks who or how the fight starts.  But the storyteller secretly asks one of the warriors to mute to his warlord. So the warlord is surprised, because he didn't know. How is he going to react?

It can happen that you are lucky enough to receive a visit of a Warlord or lady, even the champion. At that moment show of your fighting skills to become more noticed.

Invading tribes, quests, Celebrations and worship, are all part of more fun to happen in the event.

Gather in

We all gather at the beginning in the Great Hall. If you have something important to say then this is the time. Share it with the other clans. It is custom to honour to the Queen with a small token or gift (like a poem, a flower or whatever you think is appropriate). The keeper of lore [ bull roarer] will lead the discussions. Weapons are sheated , if drawn  blood must flow!

Battle

In battle you score points for your clan. Or let the shaman cast a Wyrd magic spell to your benefit or against the foe. “Time out” is temporarily relax. “Time in” is play!

If you “die” in battle, do that with honour, create a dramatic scene complete with wounds and all! You will be marked by a referee and get your points accordingly. Stay or lie where you are and at the end you add the points up. If you are wounded for real, raise your arm and shout to a referee “wounded”  and help will be at hand.

The insulting of the other tribe before a battle starts took longer then the combat!

Gather your clan, kin and shamans in the sidelines, they will encourage you by singing worship, screaming cry’s, shouting, jumping, making a hell of a noise! The clanleaders give the signal to raise your weapons. And then you go for it!
To “die” in battle was the biggest honour a warrior could get, so they did not fear death! If s-he was bald, the burial was with belongings, horse, food and drinks to accompany them to the Summerlands. Some preferred  to be left on the battlefield to be carried home by the beautiful warrior goddess Morrigan disguised as a crow. If you slain someone, stop attacking and fight the next player closest to you. Work out a tactic with your fellow clan. Elves, dwarves trolls, changelings can all fight in battle. Or choose a site to fight for.

Sometimes the Champions only have a fight till death, the rest watches and encourage them by chills. To the given signal, usually a horn blowing or a piper, you stop!

And this...

Please don’t come in jeans and trainers, mobile phones and watches! Make an effort.

Our Tribe is open to children and teenagers, but we are no babysitters. Mind your kids at any time, please!

Remember that the Celts were not rich! So keep this in mind when you dress up.

If you are in Battle do not carry too much upon you, it will hinder and makes you slower and get lost!

Please help cleaning up afterwards!

You're more then welcome to bring food to share.

If you have spare clothes or weapons for other people to lend please do.

You're not obliged to fight. When the battle is going on you can be the one cheering on the side.

After the game

Near the end of an event, we sit round the fire. Everyone can have a go at boasting about the battle as exaggerating as can be! Nobody can call you a liar; these stories are too good to listen too! Music, poetry, storytelling, dance; can show off their skills. Even gambling with the danger of waging your belongings or yourself as slave takes part! Beware! Disputes solved by arm wrestling or throw the dice for a forfeit.

The time is there to moan about neighbouring tribes, or quarrel over sheep! Riddles, games all a favourite pastime. Let the drinking horn pass round and give everyone the chance to join in!

About the Celts

The Celtic people

Who exactly were the Celts? The Keltoi, or Celts meaning the Hidden People, descendents of the Stonehenge makers. Also described as Noble savage or Barbarian.

They refer to a number of Ancient ones in Europe, using their languages as Brythonic, Welch, Breton, Pictish, Cornish, Limburg’s, and Friesian.

So some say they originated  from the Northern- India area (think of the blue Hindu Gods- Goddesses! And woad tattoos which are blue!) and inhabited Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Cornwall, Isle of Man,  France (Brittany), The Netherlands, Germany and to Italy.

They lived from the Iron Age or La Tene culture, Bronze Age till invaded and intermarried by the Saxons, Romans, and Germanic tribes.

Celts were highly skilled artists, jewellery makers, they  loved fighting, boasting, insulting the enemy in battle with spine chilling screams, echoing like wolfs, hounds and other animals while rattling their shields! Also fond of gambling dice games,  drinking, music, songs, storytelling and making love.

The Celtic Religion was the Old One, the Pagan Polytheism and deeply respected Nature, for cutting the wrong tree was punished! Worshipped the God Cernunnos, and Warrior Goddess Morrigan. Not to forget their kin and honoured their Queen and Chieftain.

The Celts had a well-organized social hierarchy based on clans and kinship. The three main groups within a tribe : Queen and Chieftain, the Warrior Nobility, then came the Druids, poets and jurists, and the Commoners.  Women were equal as Queens to rule, priestesses, warriors and judges. Hence  Bouddicca of the Iceni Tribe.

Trade was a form of barter or the goods given on a basis of deepen and mutual relationships.

Within a battle the Celts are well known as head-hunters. To them the head carried the soul. The heads were embalmed in Cedar oil. And decorated their horses and houses with them. In front of the houses they had a purpose, so it could cry when an enemy was near. Displayed with pride, and at special occasions wore them around the belts. Given food and drinks.

You can say that after DNA tests it was found that a lot of English and Europeans still carry the blood of these fierce Warriors!

Clothing

The clothing was made out of cotton, wool and linen. Women had long chemises and tartan dresses or skirts. The tartan kilts were very popular with bracae or trousers for the men. Brightly dyed with nature colours, but purple belonged to the nobility class. On top dressed in furs of wolf, deer, bear or sheepskins and even otter, beaver and the wildcat. Decorated with brooches, bones, combs, fibulas, and amber beads, duck and eagle crow feathers. Beautifully carved in the known spiral patterns, accompanied by lots of jewellery like rings, bracelets, necklaces. The women even had toe rings! The torc was only for Royalty or brave warlords-lady’s. The jewellery was made out of wood, bronze, copper and tin. If you were lucky silver or gold again more for nobility.

The Elven folk did not wear any metal only silver!

Note, the braver the warrior, the less they wore! Some were even naked to show off bravery and strength. They loved painting themselves with the yellow flower of woad, which left a blue stain. Better it is if specially appointed Shaman did it for you. The favourites were tattooed by their Queen! All over their bodies the spiral patterns, arms, legs and chest, don’t forget the faces! With the meaning of their clans.

They loved their hair, and wore it long, men had beards, some were clean-shaven with moustaches. The men and the women braided their hair skilfully, decorated it with glass-beads, feathers. The Warriors bleached theirs blonde and made it spiky with a mixture of lime and or wee! The new and young presented warriors had shaven heads accordingly to their status, and let it grow again.

The weaponry consisted of pitchforks, daggers, sticks, axes, bow and arrow, javelins and spears. Only the Chieftain or champions could afford swords, as a heirloom or taken from an enemy in battle. Sometimes chain mail and bronze helmets.
